InkScape is a free open-source vector graphics editor , where you can create and edit graphic elements and designs. Fonts will work great in InkScape once they are installed on your computer.
In this article, we will walk you through the steps of using installed fonts in InkScape!
Install the font
InkScape uses installed fonts. This means that you'll have to install the font on your system first. We have written a simple guide on how to install fonts:
- Installing fonts in Windows
- Installing fonts in Mac
Use your installed font in InkScape
Using the installed font in InkScape is fairly simple.
After you've installed a new font, make sure to completely close and restart InkScape. If you don't do this, the newly installed font might not show in the font list in Inkscape.
First add your text by selecting the Text Tool.
Create a text box on the canvas and write your text. Highlight the text that you would like to edit. This can be the whole text or just a part of the text.
In the top left corner, you can see and select the available fonts from a drop down menu. These are all the fonts that are installed on your computer.
Click on the arrow to the left in order to view the drop down menu.
There are two ways to find the font that you want to use in the list. You can either scroll though the list to locate the font you just installed, or you can write the name of the font in the column and the font will be selected.
The text is now changed into the new font!
You can now go ahead and change the settings of the font, such as the size, letter spacing and color.
Access special characters in InkScape
A lot of fonts come with those nice curly lines and variations of glyphs (if you want to learn more about how these different variations are called, check out our glossary ).
Inkscape supports so called PUA encoded characters. PUA stands for 'Private Use Area'. When a font is PUA encoded it means that you can access all special characters, such as the swirls, swashes and flourishes of the font. If a font isn't PUA encoded, you will only be able to use the basic characters. Sometimes this is all you need, but sometimes you are buying a font because it comes with beautiful special characters.
We have written a simple manual on how you can access the PUA encoded characters. You can read it in our PUA Encoded Font Manual .
If you don't know if a font is PUA encoded, make sure to check with the designer or seller first.
